Is it speech or language?

It's important to understand the subtle yet significant difference between speech and language when it comes to your child's development. Language encompasses a broader spectrum, including not only verbal communication but also nonverbal forms like gestures and facial expressions. It's the entire system of communication, comprising of vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and expression.
On the other hand, speech refers specifically to the verbal aspect of language—the actual production of sounds and words through coordinated movements of the mouth, tongue, and respiratory system. While language lays the foundation for communication, speech is the physical expression of that system. Understanding this difference can help you better support your child's communication skills as they grow and develop.
